Inclusive Development, infers that urban development has the potential to benefit all people, including equity deserving communities. This requires a broad and diverse suite of solutions to planning and delivering whole communities. For real estate industry decision-makers this concept is still not yet clearly defined. There is consensus, however, that there is a need to consistently maximize the potential urban development has to address more social, economic and environmental challenges than it has in the past.
Defining and delivering on inclusive goals and practices within real estate, can be a way to ensure that projects and communities are more than bricks and mortar and instead, part of the solution to broader complex systemic urban challenges. The DNA of our development practices may well be in need of a metamorphosis, one which practices more empathy and care.
How can we define what it means to be an innovative and socially responsible real estate developer in this current day and age? The stakes cannot be higher and conversations on diversity, equity and inclusion for all people can no longer be ignored or relegated to being a checkbox, whether, for example, it is around racism, the need for reconciliation, universal access, or even gender parity.
Real estate development companies are starting to address inclusive development within their projects, and are paving the way and ensuring that inclusive practices are embedded within their development process, from social procurement to robust community engagement and local partnerships.
